Frequently Asked Questions

I'm a homeowner, why do I need an Engineer?

An experienced, licensed professional engineer has an oath and a legal duty to the client and to always look out for the welfare and safety of the public. We have unique training to identify and treat the underlying source of structural problems that may arise in your home. We have specialized skills that allow us to provide design for functional, safe, and cost effective structural designs and repairs.

A contractor does not have the same legal obligation to protect your wellbeing. At IRON AND PINE, this ethical and legal obligation to the client is at the heart of everything we do.

Why not just call a contractor, or foundation repair company, first?

A contractor stands to gain directly by selling you more services, more repairs, and by upselling material costs. At IRON AND PINE, we do not work this way. We do not sell you repair methods or materials. We start by coordinating closely with you to understand your needs, followed by performing targeted structural designs for anything requiring repair or improvement, installation, or maintenance in order to keep your structure safe and performing well.

Doesn't my general home inspection already cover what you do?

An InterNACHI certified home inspector is a generalist and has many things to look at while on your property (plumbing, hvac, electrical, windows, roofing, just to name a few). There is simply no way for their inspection to be as detailed, targeted and specific on the condition of critical structural items of a home, as compared to the specialized attention that goes into our structural engineering inspections. Six years of schooling and fourteen+ years of direct professional experience ensure that we have the expertise to address your structural challenges.

When should I contact you during the process?

Whenever you need support! I'm here to support your needs. I have an extensive knowledge of the construction and permitting processes. I can offer independent insight that is not influenced by sales or construction project cost. If you have concerns regarding your structure, I'm ready to assist.

I offer my services at quickly as is reasonable. Please note that site visits on short notice may incur an additional fee. I only provide service if I'm certain I can provide relevant engineering expertise.

Why is it difficult to get a commitment from other engineers?

I put this here because I know first-hand it can be hard to find somebody when you need either structural engineering design or a residential structural inspection. Not all engineers offer residential services, or they may choose to prioritize other industry clients before homeowners. At IRON AND PINE, we are committed to responding to your inquiry within 24 hours and providing quick, reliable service and excellent communication throughout.
